Astronaut's Memorial Competition
Cape Canaveral, FL
From the flat marshland around the Astronaut’s Memorial, a thin metallic plane rising eastward toward the sky interrupts the site and introduces the physical monument. The memorial itself is a monolithic linear mass aligned with and lifting from the plane of the earth, commemorating the dreams and convictions of American astronauts. Limited only by the sky, the intervention establishes a strong dialogue between ground and horizon.
The surface is continuous, interrupted only at its base where it is warped to form a shallow elliptical recess. This gesture creates a duality between center and linear projection, symbolizing home and exploration. The monument’s surface is composed of proportionally scaled metal panels that express the structure. As one descends into the elliptical recess, views of the surrounding marsh disappear, replaced by a controlled horizon defined by a thin film of water. This intentional removal of context encourages introspection and reflection, with inscribed quotes visible beneath the water surface. Turning outward, the visitor reconnects with the marshland and the reflected sky, echoing an astronaut’s perspective looking back toward Earth. This proposal received Second Place in the Astronauts’ Memorial Competition at the Kennedy Space Center, recognizing its conceptual clarity and symbolic spatial experience.
