Bicycle Infrastructure
Louisiana Avenue, Washington D.C.
KGP Design Studio participated in designing dedicated bike lanes on Louisiana Avenue in Washington D.C., aiming to create a safe biking environment. Highlighting the significance of bicycles in sustainable urban transportation, the United States lags behind with only about 1% of commuters cycling to work, while cities like Copenhagen boast a commendable 37% of people cycling to work. The most common reason cited by non-cyclists for not cycling to work is the lack of infrastructure. This underscores the importance of initiatives like the Louisiana Avenue bike lanes in promoting biking as a viable mode of transportation.
To develop the Louisiana Avenue bike lanes, KGP proposed three alternative designs, each addressing safety and aesthetic considerations in unique ways. The first option incorporated planters to separate bike lanes from vehicle traffic, offering a visually appealing and green buffer. The second option used curbs with bricks, providing a sturdy and durable boundary with a classic urban feel. The third alternative employed flexible delineator posts, also known as bollards, to create a cost-effective and adaptable solution. These alternatives were carefully evaluated to balance safety, functionality, and integration into the surrounding streetscape, ensuring a design that meets the needs of cyclists and the broader community.
