Korean War Memorial National Competition
Washington, D.C.
The design process for the international competition began with an exploration of the unresolved nature of the Korean War, framing the memorial as an opportunity to establish a sense of closure and homecoming. The proposal is organized around six granite slabs arranged on a grid, with the names of casualties inscribed on their surfaces. These walls also act as frames, directing views toward a path emerging from a grove of cherry trees. The path leads to a composition of bronze statues depicting returning soldiers embracing the flag, reinforcing themes of return, memory, and national identity. This project received an Honorable Mention in the Korean War Memorial Competition, recognizing its conceptual clarity and symbolic spatial sequence.
