Potomac Yard Metro Station

The Potomac Yard Metrorail Station is a new WMATA infill station on Virginia’s Yellow and Blue Lines, designed to support transit-oriented development (TOD) in northern Alexandria. The project involved navigating complex site constraints, including proximity to floodplains and active rail operations by CSX, Amtrak, VRE, and Metro, which required innovative design solutions such as elevated pedestrian bridges. KGP’s design seeks to develop a balance between the station’s urban context and its natural surroundings, meeting the expectations of multiple stakeholders, including the City of Alexandria, National Park Service, and WMATA. The design process incorporated extensive public engagement, ensuring the station integrates seamlessly into its historic and urban environment while catalyzing future development.

The station’s design emphasizes functionality and integration, featuring clean, modern forms that reflect its role as a gateway to the surrounding community. Elevated pedestrian bridges provide safe and efficient access across active rail tracks, while the platform and station structures are carefully configured to minimize visual impact on the adjacent George Washington National Parkway. Materials and finishes are selected to blend with the natural and historic context, creating a cohesive aesthetic that respects the site’s unique characteristics. The station layout prioritizes accessibility and connectivity, serving as both a transit hub and a catalyst for future development.

The station features a canopy that lets sunlight pass through, creating a bright and welcoming space for users. Natural light makes the station feel warm and comfortable while reducing the need for artificial lighting, helping to save energy. This design creates a better experience for passengers and supports more sustainable transit buildings.
