Union Station Parking Garage Bus Deck

KGP thinks the terminal offers an exciting opportunity (and challenge) to transform a garage into a successful bus terminal and redefine its common perception. Going back to Greyhound's origin, the terminal facility has often been at the forefront of defining our urban fabric with its Art Deco terminal buildings and as it evolved with the American city. As transportation now transitions to responding to current trends – of urban walkability, our overextended transportation network, and sustainability concerns, the terminal's design should reflect and take advantage of those trends. Closer to home, the evolution of Union Station into a multi-modal facility offers additional opportunities. This unprecedented terminal type provides an option to define a vision. As KGP seeks the appropriate design to best respond to the everyday functions of the facility, we are also considering the less tangible goals that drive a patron to return and ride the bus, such as comfort, security, ease, and even the social dynamics inherent in any thriving urban area, or Street.

As previously discussed, the east deck offers an excellent opportunity for seating, vendors, people watching, and an active and friendly context, providing relief and reducing passenger density in the bus bay area. Correctly executed, this area can be an enormous asset for the overall project. 1111 Lincoln Rd Garage in Miami represents an example of redefining a garage structure – creating an enormously successful destination – "a mixed-use garage" provides high-end retail, dining, and temporary exhibition space.
