West End Pedestrian Bridge

Pittsburg, PA

The bridge design focuses on connecting the trail loop around the river confluence, providing spectacular views to downtown Pittsburgh, and creating an exciting and unique river crossing experience that will attract users to the West End Bridge. The bridge makes bold, iconic visual statements at the two approaches and remains minimal and delicate through the main span to preserve views of the historic bridge. Pedestrians and bicyclists will experience discrete and unique travel routes to create a safe and enjoyable experience for both user groups.
This design decision anticipates a heavily utilized bikeway, either initially or after the completion of the confluence trail loop. Differences in ADA slope requirements, riding/walking surfaces, and railing height requirements lead to a pedestrian pathway and a bikeway with very different characteristics.
