Arlington accepts $20.7M for work on new Crystal City Metro entrance design by KGP
Arlington has accepted an additional $20.7 million in federal and state funds as work on the new entrance to the Crystal City Metro station moves forward.
The Arlington County Board approved the hefty appropriation on Saturday. The Federal Transit Administration provided 80% of the funds, while 20% comes from the Virginia Dept. of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).
The funding supports the addition of an east entrance to the Metro station at the northwest corner of Crystal Drive and 18th Street S. — a project that broke ground in July with expected completion in 2027.
In total, about $53 million in funding for the $146 million project — part of a package of infrastructure upgrades that helped Arlington secure Amazon’s HQ2 — has come from the federal government. Another $30 million is from the DRPT, according to a County Board report.

Potomac Yard Metro Station won the category Airport/Transit in the ENR MidAtlantic 2024 awards
We are thrilled to announce that KGP design studio has won the Airport/Transit category in the 2024 ENR (Engineering News-Record) MidAtlantic Best Projects Awards for our work on the new Metro Station at Potomac Yard. KGP was responsible for developing the first phase of the design building the overall concept for this landmark project.
KGP Design Studio's Vision Realized: Potomac Yard Metro Station to Open May 19 After Delays
A momentous occasion is on the horizon, as the long-awaited Potomac Yard Metro Station, a testament to KGP Design Studio's innovative design, will finally open its doors on May 19. This striking station, strategically located south of Reagan National Airport on a former rail yard site, has been a cornerstone of Alexandria's economic future, with a $370 million budget earmarked for its development. As the 98th addition to Metro's rail network and the seventh to open since November, it serves the Yellow and Blue lines north of the Braddock Road station.
KGP Design Studio's vision for this project has overcome nearly a year of setbacks stemming from permitting, labor, and supply challenges. The station's original opening date, April 2022, was postponed due to a required redesign of the automatic train control system and other complications. Nestled within a historic district, this station faced intricate permitting requirements and design considerations to minimize its visibility from the George Washington Memorial Parkway. However, KGP Design Studio's visionary approach, inspired by the Thorn Crown Chapel in Arkansas, has transformed the station into an architectural masterpiece with abundant natural light. This iconic station is poised to redefine the area into a bustling urban center, featuring over 550,000 square feet of commercial space and several ambitious projects already underway. The Potomac Yard Metro Station is a testament to KGP Design Studio's dedication, innovation, and promising economic growth and development for Alexandria.
